Identities We Carry comes from something I have thought about often as an Indian woman who has built a life far from where I began. We leave places, build new homes, learn new rhythms and become new versions of ourselves—but the person we were before doesn't simply disappear. We carry our languages, memories, traditions and ways of seeing with us, even as another place begins to shape us. Somewhere along the way, I stopped thinking of these as two separate identities. They had become layers of the same one.
In this painting, the woman sits among fragments of two landscapes—the warmth and architecture of one home meeting the cooler geometry of another. Slowly, those places move beyond the background and into her own form, becoming part of what she carries. She isn't caught between two worlds, and she isn't choosing one over the other. She is made of both—the life that shaped her, the life she chose, and the person who could only have emerged from carrying them together.
