Women Before Me

Collection: Desert Daughters

Women Before Me is about the invisible lineage of women who shape us. Though we each walk our own path, none of us truly walks alone. This painting is a reflection on inheritance—not of possessions, but of courage, wisdom, resilience, and belonging. It is about the quiet ways these gifts are passed from one generation to the next, becoming part of who we are long before we recognize their presence.

As an Indian artist living between cultures, I often think about how identity is carried across both distance and time. Some inheritances arrive through language, traditions, and family stories. Others reveal themselves more quietly—in our instincts, our resilience, our way of seeing the world. Even as our lives take us to new places, these unseen threads remain woven into who we are.

The figures gradually recede into the distance, moving between memory and imagination rather than representing specific individuals. They are mothers, grandmothers, mentors, ancestors, and every woman whose presence continues to echo through those who follow. Their footsteps are not behind us—they exist within us, shaping every journey forward.

Built through restrained color, expansive negative space, and simplified forms, Women Before Me invites viewers to reflect on the people, places, and histories that quietly accompany them. It is a meditation on roots and routes—not as opposing ideas, but as a single continuous path where memory, belonging, and becoming are forever intertwined.
